Knee arthritis is a very common and debilitating condition in the older population. Our physiotherapists are able to provide a number of treatments (electrotherapy, acupuncture, cortisone injectons and hyaluronic acid injections) and exercise advice that can significantly reduce pain and improve mobility. There is extensive research to prove the effectiveness of all of these treatments.
Research has shown that cortisone injections are likely to provide significant pain relief for patients with arthritic knees, even if they have not experienced relief with the use of anti-inflammatory or pain medications or physiotherapy. If the cortisone injection provides adequate symptom relief to the patient with arthritic knees, repeat injections can be provided every 3 months. We recommend hyaluronic acid injections if more conservative treatments and cortisone injections have been unsuccessful.
