The plantar fascia is a broad thick band of tissue that runs from under the heel to the front of the foot. Through overuse the fascia can become painful at its attachment to the heel bone (calcaneus). The condition is caused by inflammation or degeneration of the collagen fibres close to the attachment to the heel bone.
Plantar faciitis is common in sports which involve running, dancing and jumping, and individuals that are on their feet for long periods. Other causes of plantar faciitis include a recent change in training style or intensity, wearing footwear which is unsupportive or that has poor cushioning. Being overweight can also put extra strain on the plantar fascia.
Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include a gradual onset of pain under the heel which may radiate into the foot. Tenderness is usually felt under and on the inside of the heel which is often worse in the morning and towards the end of the day, and after exercise. Stretching of the plantar fascia may be painful.
