The Independent Physiotherapy Service has a specialist elderly rehabilitation and falls prevention service. The statistics show that his is an extremely important area of physiotherapy and it can significantly reduce the risk of falls and the resulting injury and ill health. Injury due to falls is the leading cause of mortality in people aged over 75 in the UK. 25% of fallers will sustain serious injury. Half of all fallers will fall again within 12 months. A well designed falls prevention programme, monitored by a chartered physiotherapist can significantly reduce the risk of falls. A recent study showed that following a strengthening and balance programme, there was a 60% reduction in falls and 92% reduction in A&E admissions.
Our service is headed by Linda Tremain who has spent the last 8 years specialising the rehabilitation of the frail older adult population. As well as developing and delivering fall prevention programmes, Linda also works with patient with neurological conditions to maximise the function and independence. If one of your elderly friends or relatives is weak, unsteady or has had a recent fall, please contact our offices to arrange an assessment. Linda is able to offer home visits or clinic-based treatment at a number of our South Wales locations.
Our physiotherapists will complete a comprehensive assessment. Following this they will be able to determine the best course of action to improve mobility, promote independence and reduce risk of falls.
