There is an ever increasing amount of research showing that ESWT is effective in treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions that have not responded to other treatment, including standard physiotherapy techniques, exercise, and cortisone injections. It has also been shown to be as effective as surgery in a number of studies.
Plantarfasciitis Achilles tendonitis Shin Splints Rotator cuff tendonitis Trochanteric bursitis / lateral hip pain Tennis elbow Golfer’s elbow
Extracorporeal means ‘outside the body.’ The probe of the Shock Wave machine is placed on the skin, and powerful shockwaves vibrate the tissue in the painful area. The exact mechanism of the healing is not known, but it is thought the shockwaves breakdown the damaged tissue, stimulating the rebuilding of healthy tissue.
The results are exciting for all of the chronic tendon conditions listed above. For example, In an observational study at a local South Wales hospital, 14 (88%) of 16 patients with chronic Achilles tendon pain, on a surgical waiting list decided not to undergo surgery, following 3 sessions of ESWT, due to a significant reduction in their pain.
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has declared ESWT to be safe and effective in the treatment of chronic Achilles tendonitis, Plantarfasciitis and Tennis elbow.
The research is so positive that you should not opt for tendon surgery before giving ESWT careful consideration.
