An Ultrasound-Guided Injection is an injection that is performed using an ultrasound scanner to locate the exact area where the injection is required. This is regarded as the gold standard method of performing injections.
The alternative method of performing an injection involves palpating the surrounding bones and soft tissues to guide where the needle should be inserted. Performed by a physiotherapist with good anatomical knowledge, this method can be effective in treating some conditions, but it does have its limitations.
There is a growing body of research that demonstrates why ultrasound-guided injections are the gold standard in injections. Due to the many benefits of Ultrasound Guidance, we recommend it is used for the majority of injections. We will however consider the use of an Anatomically-Guided Injections when appropriate, to keep the cost of the injection as low as possible.
Improved Accuracy
Less painful injection procedure
Reduced post-injection soreness
More consistent outcome
Improved level and duration of pain relief
Reduced risk of trauma to nerves and blood vessels
Increased range of injections possible: some injections are not safe to attempt or very inaccurate without ultrasound guidance e.g. shoulder joint, hip joint, high volume tendon stripping, Hydrodilatation for frozen shoulder
